Historical Information

Slaves  next hit sued for emancipation in freedom suits based on the following: they were descendant(s) of a previous hit free  next hit female ancestor, typically a Native American (Hening Statutes, volume 2, p.170); failure of previous hit slaveowner  next hit(s) to abide by the 1778 previous hit slave  next hit nonimportation act (Henings Statutes, volume 9, pp. 471-472); or claimed to have been freed by previous hit slaveowner  next hit(s) by deed of emancipation or last will and testament (Henings Statutes volume 11, pp. 39-40)

Henrico County was named for Henry, Prince of Wales, eldest son of King James I. It was one of the eight original shires, or counties, first enumerated in 1634. The county seat is in the western part of the county.

Recognized in 1634 as an original shire. All county court previous hit records  next hit prior to 1655 and almost all prior to 1677 are missing. Many previous hit records  next hit were destroyed by British troops during the Revolutionary War. Post–Revolutionary War county court previous hit records  next hit exist. Almost all circuit superior court of law and chancery and circuit court previous hit records  next hit were destroyed by fire during the evacuation of Richmond on April 3, 1865, during the Civil War. The county’s circuit court held its sessions at the state courthouse in Richmond.

Surnames of others involved in a suit, including secondary plaintiffs and defendants, witnesses, deponents and affiants, and family members with surnames different from the plaintiff or defendant are indexed.
